THE nine hectare Australian Woolshed site at Ferny Hills will be transformed into a quality residential precinct following its sale to BTS Properties last week.

The site, which has been abandoned since the Australian Woolshed ceased operations in February 2006, will be divided into 62 residential lots ranging in size from 410 sqm to 1000 sqm.

BTS Properties Director, Sam Sciacca, said the heritage of the site would be maintained.

"As a Samford resident, it has saddened me to see the way in which the site – which was a Queensland tourism icon for so many years – has deteriorated and fallen victim to vandals," he said.

"This development will not only clean up the site, but will revive its heritage. We intend to use some of the existing structures, signage and relics from the Australian Woolshed for streetscaping and in community areas. "

"We also intend to name the development to reflect its history."

Mr Sciacca said the natural appeal of the site would also be maintained, with parklands occupying almost half the site.

"When developing plans for the site, we were keen to ensure the bush-like quality of the site was maintained - not just for the new residents, but also the surrounding communities," he said.

"Accordingly, trees will only be removed when necessary and four of the nine hectares will remain open space, with vast expanses of parkland throughout the site. "

"This, coupled with the proximity of the site to the city, public transport and schools, will make the blocks very popular, especially with families."

The site represents one of the largest residential land releases within a 16 km radius of the Brisbane CBD in recent years.

"Rarely do new home builders have the opportunity to live an urban lifestyle close to the city with access to huge acreage-style parks. It's the best of both worlds."

Work on the site will commence in the next couple of months, with blocks expected to be released to the market early next year.
